To the Readers
Mai Ngọc Phát, Vietnam Numismatics #5 (10-2018), p.2
Dear researchers and collectors,
Dear readers,
Ancient coins are special artifacts that reflect the rise and fall of dynasties, mark historical periods, and record changes in culture, the economy, and other spheres of society.
Through the four volumes of Vietnam Numismatics published so far, you have joined us in exploring the circulating currency of the Nguyễn dynasty, from the reign of Emperor Gia Long to those of Minh Mạng, Thiệu Trị, and others. When it comes to ancient Vietnamese coinage, we seek to guide readers from basic to advanced study, helping new collectors learn about each item in their collections.
Regarding Vietnamese paper money, we strive to provide readers with previously unpublished documents or to shed further light on topics that have already been introduced.
In this issue, we continue our series with "Reward Money of Thiệu Trị", "Tự Đức Thông Bảo coins", and "French Indochina 500 piastres banknotes". Notably, in 1944 and 1945, the IDEO (Far Eastern printing house) printed two versions of the 500 piastres banknote, in different colors and paper types. Through these materials, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the periods of ups and downs in the nation's history. There are also many other articles on Vietnamese and world currencies, featuring fascinating materials.
The Editorial Board of Vietnam Numismatics respects individual views and publishes authors' critical opinions fully and honestly. It seeks to clarify unresolved issues and welcomes constructive criticism and debate to reach agreement on previously disputed matters.
The enthusiastic support of researchers, collectors, and readers motivates us to continue publishing future volumes.
With sincere regards!
