Part 2: Presentation money of Minh Mạng (1820-1840)

In Vietnam Numismatics, Volume 02, 01/2018, we introduced Part 1: Silver Ingots from the Reign of Emperor Gia Long. Continuing the series of articles on Nguyễn Dynasty Treasures by Nguyễn Đình Chiến and Trương Văn Thắng, we would like to introduce Part 2: Presentation Money from the Reign of Emperor Minh Mạng. The artifacts studied are limited to those in the Nguyễn Dynasty Treasures collection of the Vietnam National Museum of History.
During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng, various types of silver ingots were also minted, with the obverse bearing the four characters Minh Mạng Niên Tạo [明命年造] (made during the Minh Mạng reign), and the reverse bearing the four raised characters Quan Ngân Nhất Tiền [官銀壹錢] (official silver, 1 tiền) and Quan Ngân Tứ Tiền [官銀四錢] (official silver, 4 tiền).
During the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng, round coins with square holes began to be minted in a wide variety of gold, silver, and copper. The obverse bears four raised characters, Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶], read diagonally. The reverse varies from coin to coin, with decorative patterns and four- or eight-character auspicious phrases expressing good wishes, peace, and blessings for the emperor and the people. For example, coin No. LSb.35437 is made of silver and has a diameter of 2.5 cm. The obverse bears the raised reign inscription Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶], and the reverse is plain (Figure 4). Or coin No. LSb.34836, made of gold and measuring 3.2 cm in diameter. The obverse bears the raised reign inscription Minh Mạng thông bảo [明命通寶], while the reverse bears a four-character auspicious phrase: Phú Thọ Đa Nam [富壽多男] (wealth, longevity, and many sons) (Figure 5). Another example is the Flying Dragon coin, No. LSb.39210, made of silver and measuring 4.4 cm in diameter. The obverse bears the raised reign inscription Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶], and the reverse is decorated with an S-curved dragon surrounded by a serrated border. As we can see, these Minh Mạng reward coins feature a wide variety of unique inscriptions and decorative elements, occasionally drawing directly from motifs of daily life.
According to the Đại Nam Thực Lục, in the 11th year of Minh Mang (1830), 10,000 large copper coins bearing the inscription Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶] were minted [16, Vol. 5, p. 64]. "The emperor ordered the guards of the Ministry of Revenue to work together with the master craftsman Vũ Khát, following the prescribed inscriptions and designs, to cast 20 types with eight-character inscriptions and 10 types with four-character inscriptions. In the 18th year of Minh Mạng's reign (1837), the government ordered the minting of an additional 100,000 auspicious-inscription coins. In addition to the previous inscriptions and designs, there were three more eight-character inscriptions and seven more four-character inscriptions" [21, Vol. 5, p. 18].
In the sixth month of the year Nhâm Thìn [壬辰], the 13th year of Minh Mạng (1832) "Cast gold and silver Phi Long coins. 1,000 gold coins were made, each weighing 3 phân, using gold of 70-80% purity. 20,000 silver coins were made, each weighing 7 phân, using silver of 70% purity" [21, Vol. 5, p. 96].
Flying Dragon Coin: This type of coin was cast in silver. The obverse bears characters Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶] (made during the Minh Mạng reign, 1820-1840). The reverse bears an S-shaped dragon with the characters Thập Ngũ [十五] underneath. These characters indicate the 15th year of the Minh Mạng reign. Both the obverse and reverse have a border of pointed serrations along the edge. Diameter: 4.4 cm; weight: 20 grams. The Đại Nam thực lục records: "In the first month of the year Giáp Ngọ [甲午], the 15th year of Minh Mạng (1834), silver Minh Mạng Flying Dragon coins were cast. Ordered the Provincial Treasurer of Quảng Nam to join the Ministry of Works, along with a Guard Commander and an Imperial Guard suitable for Cabinet duties, to take turns attending the Internal Workshop to oversee the minting process" [17, Vol. 14, p. 52].
Flying Dragon Coin, year 14: This type of coin was cast in silver. The obverse bears characters, Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶] (made during the Minh Mạng reign, 1820-1840). The reverse bears an S-shaped dragon, with characters Thập Tứ [十四] below. These characters indicate the 14th year of the Minh Mạng reign. Historical records state: "In the third month of of the year Quý Tỵ [癸巳], the 14th year of Minh Mạng (1833), the Emperor dispatched officials from the Ministries of Finance and Works alongside Cabinet inspectors to the Internal Workshop to supervise the artisans in minting Minh Mang Flying Dragon coins according to specifications" [16, Vol. 12, p. 58].
The collection of the National Museum of History also includes Flying Dragon coins cast in copper during the reign of Minh Mạng. The coin is round with a square hole (VN31-1), 4.2 cm in diameter, weighing 12 grams. The obverse bears characters Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶]. The border features two flying dragons. The reverse bears four characters, Phú Thọ Đa Nam [富壽多男] (wealth, longevity, and many sons). The border is decorated with a floral vine.
There are 30 types of Minh Mạng Thông Bảo [明命通寶] reward coins made of copper, including 10 types with four-character auspicious inscriptions on the reverse and 20 types with eight-character auspicious inscriptions, as shown in the table below.
