Coins and Banknotes of Vietnam
and French Indochina

To the Readers

Mai Ngọc Phát, Vietnam Numismatics #4 (07-2018), p.2

Dear researchers and collectors,
Dear readers,

The history of Vietnamese currency spans more than 1,000 years, closely linked to the nation's history. It reflects the economic, political, and social conditions of each historical period and preserves the legacy of the dynasties that ruled our country. The coins of the Early Lê dynasty are regarded by the international community as the finest ancient coins in the region at that time, perhaps because the dynasty was at the peak of its prosperity.

Beginning with this fourth issue, we are pleased to introduce the first article in the long-running series "The Colors of Time on Ancient Vietnamese Coins" by the late collector Nguyễn Văn Cường, titled "Reflections on the Currency Circulating in Vietnam During the Imperial Era".

In this issue, we also present several notable articles, including: an analysis of "Counterfeit Money in Case CM12"; "Notes on Currency in The History of the Kingdom of Tonkin"; images of reward coins from the reign of Emperor Minh Mạng and Thiệu Trị Thông Bảo coins of the Nguyễn dynasty; "The Future of PMG-Graded Banknotes"; along with many other interesting articles and reference materials.

At the request of many readers, this fourth issue introduces a new section, "Rediscovering the Past", dedicated to collectors of cultural heritage from the past or items that have faded into obscurity.

After publishing the first three issues, we received many articles, comments, and responses on various topics, in line with the criteria established in the inaugural issue. In addition, the Editorial Board has received many letters and documents addressing matters of current interest to readers. We will select and gradually present articles and useful materials to our valued readers.

The Editorial Board sincerely hopes that researchers, collectors, and readers will continue to contribute articles and valuable opinions, and accompany us in future issues.
